Just prior to the start the Girls race on Saturday, it was announced that the Westosha Boys team had qualified for the State Meet. This gave the girls team extra motivation to qualify as well. "We all just screamed. Last year, both teams didn't get to go, so we're excited that we all get to be together this year" said Senior Melissa Capra.
The girls, just like the boys, finished second at the Sectional. This is only the third time in school history that both the boys and girls teams have qualified for the WIAA State Meet. The other two times were 1998 and 2012.
Melissa Capra finished third out of 77 runners with a time of 19:41.9. Last year Capra won the Sectional; however, Capra stated "overall, the biggest factor that affected my race was the air - we've been so used to running in the colder weather". "My lungs were burning the entire race. I was pretty far off my PR, but that's OK. It gives me a goal for state". Coach Keith Olsen added "Melissa is just a little scrappy girl. She never get too high or too low. She just goes out and races".
Melissa's sister joined her on the state qualifying team this season for the first time in her high school career. Meghan, a freshman, finished ninth with a time of 20:31. Joining the Capra sisters were Maria Sabourin (19th - 21:30.6), Maddie Murphy (21st - 21:45.7), and Mackenzie Maccaux (22nd - 21:49.3).
