Dorm Grams, CHS Staff & Coach
Dormund, or Dorm as he was better known as, started his career at Salem Central High School in 1957. Prior to working at Central he was a successful coach at the Racine County Agricultural School in Rochester. Originally Mr. Grams took the position at Central viewing it as a stepping stone in his career with the intent of staying for two to three years. As fate would have it, Mr. Grams ended up retiring from the district after 29 years of service in 1986.
While employed at Central Mr. Grams coached three different sports including boys’ basketball, football and boys’ golf. Additionally, he served as the district’s athletic director from when he was hired in 1957 until he retired in 1986. In 1983 Mr. Grams was named the Wisconsin Athletic Director of the Year for District 6. This was the first time that such an award was given to an athletic director from a non-metro school. While serving as the athletic director he oversaw the implementation of girls sports at the high school level following the enactment of Title IX in 1972. Mr. Grams was proud of all of the athletes that he coached and strongly believed that athletics was a builder of character in young people.
